Pot Attributed to Dave

Dave is considered to be one of the south's most accomplished potters. He was a slave ( b. 1780 - d. 1863 ) owned by Abner Landrum in Edgefield, South Carolina. In 1831, Dave was given to Abner Landrum's brother-in-law Lewis Miles to work in his pottery near Aiken, South Carolina. During this time, Dave began to incise verses on the sides of his large storage jars. Some of them were:

July 31, July 1840
Dave belongs to Mr. Miles
Where the oven bakes and the pot biles

1858
This Nobel jar will hold 20
Fill it with silver and you will have plenty

13 May 1859
Made at Stoney Bluff
For making ( lard ) enuff

3 May 1862
I made this jar all of cross
If you don't repent you will be lost
