Annual Fall Pottery & Glass Festival October Featured ArtistsCedar Creek Resident
Artists Our festivals are our chance to show off our rock stars. Okay, so the glass artists and potters aren’t really rock stars but they are to us. When they are dirty, covered in sweat, smiling ear-to-ear talking about their latest ideas and pieces (or disappointments), our artists are inspirational. Their enthusiasm and comradery are infectious throughout the grounds. It gets everyone excited. Come see for yourself. During the festival you will see the glass blowers spin molten glass into colorful bowls and vases. Lisa Oakley and Matt Decker will amaze you as they pull "glass taffy" along the length of the glass studio porch. The Four Winds: Dana Smith, Pringle Teetor, Will Kurylo, and Stephen Galla, will dance around the studio blowing glass vases and bowls. Not to be outdone, resident potters: Brad Tucker & Tim Turner will spin lumps of wet clay into casseroles and pitchers. Jennifer Stas, our resident hand-builder, will transform slabs of clay into trays, plaques, dishes, and vases. Although John Martin will not be demonstrating his clay skills, you will find him in the nursery answering your fall gardening questions.
Lisa Oakley grew up at Cedar Creek and always loved the arts. She thought clay was too dirty and hard so, somehow she found her own niche glassblowing. Who knew it would be so hot.
Sid asked John Martin to come further develop the gardens at Cedar Creek over twenty years ago. John's artistic skills were quickly realized when he began working with Sid on the crystalline glazed porcelain and making lamps. John now works with Geoff Lloyd keeping the Cedar Creek crystalline pottery alive.
Tim Turner came back to Cedar Creek when he realized that he wanted to return to his love of making pots. Today, Tim still paints and makes the most fantastic functional pieces (along with Brad!).
Lisa Oakley offered her old studio space to Dana Smith, Pringle Teetor, Will Kurylo and Stephen Galla after they showed their passion for glass. Four years ago they assembled the equipment and started working as the Four Winds Glass Studio.
Jennifer Stas was invited to join the resident potters here two years ago. Her pots are serious yet whimsical and her personality matches their beauty and strength.
Matt Decker has worked assisting Lisa Oakley for six years. This year Matt has been developing some of his own work in glass. Expect to see more of Matt as he continues this journey. |
