Gallery Spotlight - February 2012

Laurie Shaman in studio

Each month in 2012, Cedar Creek Gallery will highlight one artist or craftspersons' work in the front room or another premier location. This gives our customers a chance to see the highest volume of work by that artist as it is brought into the retail space. It will also keep the space rotating its stock so that the displays will retain a fresh and exciting look. We hope you will like this new feature.

Ceramic Artist
~ Illinois ~

The time I spend on my artwork can be divided into two phases:

I first research for the imagery. This may include sketching in the studio from books and
accumulated source materials such as photos, postcards and memorabilia from experiences such as travels and theater performances. Museum and gallery visits, books on mythology, architecture, animals and, on occasion, a live model may influencethe imagery in my artwork.

In the second phase, I handbuild the ceramic vessels or wall forms most often using earthenware or porcelain slabs. The size, shape and contours vary with each body of work and suggest to me the possibilities of embellishment. The imagery, applied in either a random or deliberate way, produces a kind of lyrical narrative that usually involves some combination of figure, animal, architecture and landscape.

It is my hope that the shapes of the ceramic vessels, together with the surface imagery,
will convey both classical and contemporary sensibilities.
